Healthy vs Unhealthy Relationships
By Catie Ward
February 4, 2026As February approaches, we also approach Teen Dating Violence Awareness month. First relationships for teens are a mix of excitement, vulnerability, and lots of learning, but it can also be a space where unhealthy patterns show up.
It is important to know that dating violence is not only physical, it is not just bruises or shouting. Dating violence can show up as constant texting, pressure, control, and jealousy that is framed as “care” for the other person.
By raising awareness and sharing important information, we can help young people recognize what healthy relationships actually look like and remind them that respect, safety, and consent are not optional; they're essential.
What a healthy relationship looks like:
- Reliability
- Honesty
- Communication
- Mutual respect
- Ability to work together
What an unhealthy relationship looks like:
- Intense
- Possessive
- Manipulation
- Isolation
- Belittling
- Guilting
Fun Facts:
- Healthy relationships boost well-being with strong social ties and increase survival chances by 50%, reducing risks of depression, stress, and even premature death. It is important to understand how impactful healthy relationships are on your life and your overall well-being.
- Only 33% of teens who were in an abusive relationship never reported the abuse; this is key to know due to many cases of violence go underreported. This can be for many reasons, such as fear in the relationship, familiarity in an individual's past, or the behaviors are subtle, many times they start out small before they escalate.
